WORK HARD, PLAY HARD
Our team motto has always been “Work hard, play hard”. But what does that mean, and how do we stick by that motto? Let’s break this down just a little “bit”. (Get it??)
We have a lot to do. Between running things in the US, Uganda, and Bali, there’s a lot of moving parts in our company. And being a small team, we all wear a lot of hats. It never really slows down for us, EVERY season is a “busy season”. Here’s how we make sure everything that needs to get done, gets done:
+ WE SET GOALS
Goal setting has been a game-changer for us. No matter what role we play in the company, each member of our team sets weekly and monthly goals. They could be as little as sending out specific e-mails, to finishing campaigns. There’s something about having a deadline that helps you find the determination to get the job done.
+ WE STAY FOCUSED
We’re not your typical “9-5” corporate job. Our office is relaxed, our work attire is typically yoga pants, and we can come and go as we please. But with that flexibility comes distractions, so we have to work hard to stay focused. Each of us has figured out our best working environment – some of us think best when we’re at our desk, others do better at home or in a coffee shop. There are days when all of us are in the office together, and days when we trade out.
+ WE KEEP EACH OTHER ACCOUNTABLE
We have team meetings frequently, to go over what we’re all working on and to make sure that everyone is on the same page. In those meetings we all get the chance to share about our latest projects and get feedback from one another. We have weekly phone calls with our staff in Uganda and Bali, daily e-mail conversations, and even a newsletter that’s circulated to all of our international staff. It can be a challenge working internationally, but we’ve figured out a pretty solid system!
+ WE’RE A TEAM
Being a small company, there are oftentimes big orders or projects that require “All hands on deck”! In these situations, everyone at 31 Bits jumps in and helps. That might mean some random late nights or early mornings once and awhile, and that’s ok. There’s a bigger purpose behind the daily grind, and that’s what keeps us motivated – even when we’re in over our heads!
Now the fun part. 🙂 We like to say that we’re more than a team, we’re a family. Being a family, we’re ALL ABOUT having fun together. Once the job is done, we try to always make time to just hang out and forget about “work talk” for a couple hours. Here’s a few things we like to do:
+ HAPPY HOUR
Who doesn’t love a good happy hour? Every once and awhile we like to leave the office a little early and grab a drink together. It’s a fun way to stay connected and unwind… especially after a crazy holiday season!
+ TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES (THAT ARE ACTUALLY FUN)
We’re always on the hunt for fun activities to do as a team. There’s something special about getting out of the office and doing something that’s not work related. It’s bonding and motivating, and in our case, the cheesier the activity the better! Some of our favorites have been mini golf, cooking classes, bowling, pottery class, etc! And you don’t have to spend a lot of money on activities too.. go for a hike or to the beach!
+ BREAKFAST TOGETHER
Because our team is small, we can do things that not all big companies can do… like make breakfast together! We’ll meet at Jessie’s house and “meet” over breakfast, because why not? It’s fun to break up the routine every once and awhile… and who doesn’t love pancakes!
+ PARTY HARD
Now, don’t read that the wrong way. We’re not saying we like to rage, we’re just saying we like to throw parties!! (If any of you have been to one of our parties, you totally understand.) We love hosting and throwing parties together, and it’s an awesome way for us to engage with our community and celebrate big milestones. Plus, there isn’t one of our teammates that doesn’t love to dance. It’s a rule around here. 😉
So, there it is folks. It’s important to work hard, but it’s also just as important to take care of yourself and the people around you. We’ve found a work/play balance that works for us, but we’d love to hear what’s worked for YOU!
